When a rollball is to be performed

  • When a touch has been effected
  • When possession changes due to the sixth touch
  • When possession changes due to the ball going to ground
  • When possession changes due to an infringement by an attacking player at a penalty or a tap
  • When possession changes when the half is touched (or places the ball on or over the score line) whilst in possession of the ball
  • When possession changes due to a player in possession of the ball running across the sideline
  • When so directed by the referee

How to perform a rollball

  1. Position your body to be one side of the defender
  2. Decelerate as you approach
  3. Focus on the hips of the defender
  4. Flex your knees and hips for added support
  5. Use your hand nearest to the defender to make the touch, whilst your other hand to securely hold the ball
  6. Effect the touch at hip height on your opponent
  7. Make sure your on the touch mark, that you are facing your attacking score line and that you are parallel to the sidelines
  8. Place the ball on the ground just in front or in-between your feet
  9. Roll the ball gently backwards, but no more than a metre
  10. Step squarely over the ball to complete the move

  • Control the ball
  • Place the ball smoothly on the ground

Common errors when performing a rollball

  • Running over the touch mark and having to retreat to make the rollball, giving the defenders time to organise and get back onside
  • Not initiating the touch and the rollball
  • Not using your hand nearest to the defender to make the Touch
  • Performing the rollball off balance and spilling the ball
  • Bouncing the ball when rolling, causing problems for the Half
  • Rolling the ball to far back and conceding a penalty
  • Performing the roll ball ahead of the touch mark (i.e. not retreating) and conceding a penalty
